LashBlast vs. DiorShow: Mascara Showdown

I've mentioned before (here and here)that I love DiorShow mascara . I love the volumizing formula, the rosewater fragrance, the pretty tube, the giant brush. What I don't love is the exorbitant price. For $24 I could buy a one-way plane ticket to Boise, Idaho. Or a round of antibiotics. Or a ham.

MAC Fibre Riche is usually my favorite affordable alternative (it's about 10 bucks), but lately my trusty backup seemed flaky and unenthusiastic, which are two of my least favorite qualities in people and mascara. It was time to try something new.

On a recent trip to Walgreens, I noticed Covergirl LashBlast was on sale for 5 bucks, so I decided to try it out. Here's my review, in an awkward sentence fragment format:

Looks: like a sex toy. The tube is large. And orange. I will probably hide it when my grandma comes over.

Feels: great. My lashes stay soft and full throughout the day.

Smells: OK, I guess. A little chemical-y, sure, but for $20 less per tube than the lovely rosewater-scented DiorShow, I'm not going to complain.

Tastes: like chicken. JK, you guys, I didn't taste it (yet). But wouldn't that be upsetting if it actually tasted like chicken?

Goes on: thick. It's easy to overdo it, but just one coat adds a ton of volume and definition.

Here I am in one coat of LashBlast plus a shmidge of eyeliner:

Verdict: For 5 bucks, my lashes are happy and I'm happy and as soon as I hide the tube my grandma will be happy.

Now I'm off to buy a ham.

Not much beats the joy of finding your perfect mascara. Mine is "The Curling" by Kevyn Aucoin. It's love.

We share the opinion on eyeglasses and I really enjoy reading your article.

I'd been wanting to try this one out! Thank you for the review. Your eye hairs look fabulous! :o)

Oooh, I LOVE LashBlast. But NEVER TRY the waterproof! That shit made my eyes BURN. And it NEVER came off. Even though I haven't used it in about 6 months, I'm fairly certain I still have some on. But the regular stuff is great!

I know what you mean! All the good mascaras are so expensive. I just tried the Mary Kay Ultimate and I liked it, but it's expensive! Thanks for the tip.

I love Lash Blast mascara! The first thing my husband said when he saw it was "is that a vibrator?" I think it smells better than regular mascara!

One of the first things I'm going to buy when I visit New York in November is a tube of Lash Blast. I blame America's Next Top Model for making me want the entire Covergirl range. Although I swear you used to be able to buy it in England.

I whole heartedly agree on the Diorshow (the fragrance, the price). I like to approach the makeup counter and feign ignorance and get the free little samples.

Your blog is phenomenal.

Love the site! You're making me want to run out to the drugstore at lunch to hunt for new makeup!

I love Lash Blast. I sometimes pair it with Lash Blast Length to get long and thick lashes.

I hate the fat brush on this mascara. In the waterproof formula, it's pretty amazing, but SO HARD to get off...

I wouldn't buy this again. I need a slimmer brush and something not quite as fat to hold

How is it for smudgy-ness? I have deep-set eyes and long lashes, so the more inexpensive brands of mascara that I can get at Target or CVS usually smudge all over my brow by the end of a day and I have to buy the absurdly expensive Estee Lauder-for-extreme-length kind if I want to not look like a raccoon...though I've actually been pretty happy with the Telescopic Explosion thing recently. But, yeah. Smudgy?

Ditto on the DiorShow, but I'll be curious if you still love the LashBlast in a week or so - that stuff dries out and gets clumpy FAST. There's only one drugstore mascara I've ever been truly impressed by: http://www.beautybets.com/2009/11/maybe-its-maybelline/

I just use whatever mascara I've recently gotten for free. They do seem to show up.

Is it just me or is that spam comment about glasses up there inexplicably hilarious?

I ALMOST bought some lash blast recently. I wish now that I had.

I got a free sample of Lash Blast length (in the yellow tube) when I went to a special premiere of the movie "Whip It" - because Drew Barrymore is a Cover Girl - and I love it. I was never willing to fall into the Cover Girl trap because I get tired of the ham-handed pimping they do on America's Next Top model (one of the few shows I watch), but when it comes to Lash Blast, I'm a believer!

This is the mascara I usually buy and I love it - soft, full eyelashes. But I agree on the waterproof thing, it never goes off. But the regular one washes off with some water so it's great.

Both happen to be my favorites as well!

Thanks for posting this Winona! I am a mascara junkie and a big fan of DiorShow (also, Big Fatty from Urban Decay) but not so much the price. I'm totally going to try out LashBlast. It'll make me look like Drew Barrymore, right?

HA! I left mine on my mom's counter when I went to visit her a couple of weeks ago and it seriously gave her pause. "What is THIS?" she said, with a tone, like ohpleasegod don't tell me my daughter has left a sex toy on my counter. It was pretty funny.

Mascara money for ham is possibly one of the best re-prioritization statements I've heard lately.

LashBlast is one of my dependable standbys--such great performance in an affordable product! Lately I've been using LashBlast Length because the brush seems to suit my shorter Asian lashes better.

looks great, I might have to try this. I usually wear YSL false lash effect but it's so expensive I have to call my bank manager when I need a replacement!!

See, your lashes look lucious... and when I tried that product, mine were a clumpy disaster. My current lash obsession? Buxom Lash - Special Effects in Blue Noir. You can only tell that it's blue in ideal lighting conditions but it's LOVELY and I've never received more compliments on my makeup!

That's the mascara I use!
It's the best- but you're right, easy to over-due it :]

I use it because Drew Barrymore uses it haha

You have the most gorgeous eyes, EVER!

Many an ANTM has been undone by trying to get the words "Last Blast Mascara" out during their Covergirl commercial challenge.

great review, it looks good on you :)

Thanks for posting this! I wish I could convey to the marketing industry that all the zillions I'm sure they spent on commercials and Drew Barrymore's salary were nowhere near as effective in getting me to buy this product as your testimonial. Blogging is the new word of mouth, and I trust the honest, detailed review of one blogger much more than commercials!

..wouldn't it be upsetting if it DIDN'T taste like chicken?
