Straightening Irons, Tetanus Shots, and New Perspectives

I got a haircut last week, and I left the salon looking something like Victoria Beckham:

When I washed my hair and tried to style it on my own, I looked like the mom from 7th Heaven:

This was not a pleasant surprise.

I was at the Saturday Market this weekend, which takes place under a bridge in downtown Portland, when I felt something sharp puncture my sandal and enter my foot. I screamed, "Oh my god! I just got AIDS!" The pottery vendor next to me seemed a bit confused.

When I lifted up my foot to confirm my suspicions, I saw a dirty nail sticking out of it:

This was a pleasant surprise.

It must be the month for puncture wounds. After the cat bite from the stray kitty and 15 (rabies) shots later, I'm kind of sick of the hospital. Did you go to the emergency room. The ER makes me fear to ever be in a life-threatening situation - They scare me more than any injury.

I actually L'dOL at your exclamation when you stepped on a nail. Not that this is an unreasonable exclamation if one does discover that he or she got AIDS. Really it's good any time.

Also, Anne-Marie is so right. The woman in the top-left corner of that picture looks like you with pink hair.

Yikes! I read the entry without reading the subject line at first (hey, it's early and I haven't had my three hours it takes to wake up) and all I could think was, I hope she got a tetanus shot.

I went to the Saturday Market a couple months ago and spotted a woman walking around on the pavement in just socks. I wish I could go back in time and show her this post!

you have to dry your hair with a round brush!!! and then straighten it a little if you need to.
i've had a similar hair cut, it's a lot of work.
it turned out ok during second semester when my new roommate had a really nice blow dryer. it always made my hair so smooth and shiny, that i wanted to take a shower everyday!

get a tetanus shot!

Photos of new hair pleeeease.

Bizarrely, I got a tetanus shot last Monday. I shit you not. GO get one, lady! Safety first. And prepare to avoid freeweights, lifting anything heavier than a cereal box, and arm-flapping for at least a week.

lmao your exclamation is hilarious, and ouch! a nail!?

I can relate to the hair problem. I particularly love the promise that a style will still look great when you let it air dry. Unless your hair dries pin straight or in perfect ringlets - then this is just an urban legend perpetuated by salons.

My sister and I wrestle with something we call "Anne Frank" hair, having grown up with an edition of the diary that was adorned with a photo of her during a particularly bad hair day. I always wondered why they picked that one.

Probably the only time you'll ever be glad to see a rusty nail puncture your foot. Bleah.

I can never get my hair to look the same on my own as it did in the salon, so I milk the blowout for as long as I can.

Eek!! That's terrible. Hope you are ok. Better than the first scenario. This is somewhat of a problem in certain areas of Vancouver as I'm sure you have heard.

Egads! How awful! By the way, I've been using "egads" for a looooong time, and I was so happy to find it in the "I will not name this post Mad For Plaid" post!

I'll send the idea to a publisher, for sure. It's a children's classic waiting to happen! :)

anne-marie--
OMG you're totally right! I saw that picture and was like, "Winona? Is that you?"

Sal--
I'm in the midst of my tetanus shot-induced dead arm week right now. Not so fun.

WendyB--
You crack me up more than you'll ever know.

Right?? Total paradigm shift. I am thankful for a dirty nail in my foot.

Egads! I love to say "Egads!"

New to your blog and love it! I had my hair cut like that yesterday, and my best tip would be to blow it dry using a flat brush. As your blowing it dry, make sure and dry the back first brushing the back from side to side, so it goes underneath. Works like a charm! Promise.

Sorry about the nail, but at least it's not aids! :)
