Awesome Affordable Etsy Find of the Week: Not Santa Cat

Let me throw down some heavy truth for you right now: I own a Christmas sweater.

Not just a regular Christmas sweater, either, but a Christmas sweater with pom poms, bell sleeves, a rickrack neckline and a large embroidered image of a smiling cat wearing a Santa hat. And I bought this sweater in 1998, before hipsters existed, before irony was a style, before the inception of the "ugly sweater party" (fashion historians generally agree that the first of these celebrations occurred circa 2002).

I bought this sweater because I couldn't get over the cuteness and hilarity of a smiling Santa Cat. I bought it completely earnestly and with the spirit of Christmas in my heart.

But you know what? If I were to take the advice/threats/bribes of those I love and set the Santa Cat sweater aside (or on fire, maybe) to make a more subtle holiday fashion statement, I'd totally wear something like these pretty holiday earrings:

They don't scream holiday cheer like a Santa Cat sweater does, but they do politely suggest it, and wouldn't they pair beautifully with a simple black dress to make the holiday party rounds? I might have to get myself a pair. With permission from Santa Cat, of course.

P.S. Thanks so much to Katrina for the tip about fabulous Etsy shop City Noise Vintage!

UPDATED to respond to demands for a Santa Cat photo: First of all, you guys crack me up. Second of all, are my words not worth a thousand pictures, or something like that? Third of all, fine, I'll try my best to dig it out of my Christmas decor boxes and post some photo evidence for ya.

...Aaaand I think we need to see a pic of the Santa Cat sweater, ASAP.

I agree with Jen. You cannot claim to own such a thing and then not offer evidence of it's existence. Pleasepleaseyplease!

Adorable, those would look great. Last Christmas I saw a girl with DIY earrings made out of really tiny christmas bows, they were really cute. I think earrings are safe from too much holiday cheer.

Pictures of the sweater, please! :D

I love finding awesome things on Etsy; I really wish I had a disposable income (or...any income, really) so I could buy just about everything & anything I needed outside of food from Etsy <3

In Australia it's ridiculously hot at Xmas so I have a handful of Xmas t-shirts, but now that I'm in the northern hemisphere a t-shirt won't do! I started the hunt for an Xmas cardigan earlier in the year and then gave up... I am now inspired to start the hunt again! All in the name of cheesy photos next to the tree, I say. And yes, photo of the sweater, please!

I agree with the aforementioned requests - picture of Santa Cat sweater please!! :)

I love that you wrote that the earrings "politely suggest" Xmas, anything that politely suggests anything is hard to ignore. That would just be rude.

Tell Santa Cat I've been good this year and to bring me lots of catnip.

My friend hosts an ugly Christmas sweater party every year. The one with the worst (best) sweater wins a gift :)

Those earrings are adorable though.

I agree with above posters who say a photo of the Santa Cat sweater is in order. Please don't tease. Don't do me like that.

Winona, I have no Santa Cat sweater. I was given a Melting Snowman Sweatshirt! It's true. You see my family is very small town politically conservative and I am a San Francisco gal living with her Asian boyfriend of 12 years. My father though, tries. He really does. Last Christmas he gave me a very large bright blue sweatshirt with a hideous melting snowman holding up a sign staying "Stop Global Warming". I cannot verbally express how horrific this sweatshirt was. And yet my Dad was so proud he had bought me something "liberal". So I squealed with joy though I really hated it and even wore it for the family pictures. When I made it back to San Francisco from rural (State name withheld to avoid offending anyone), my boyfriend said it couldn't have been much worse. I assured him that had he come along, there would have been matching Melting Snowman sweatshirts we both would have had to wear for family pictures. How do I avoid this in the future?!?!

P.S. I'm the girl who twittered about what to wear to a documentary film premiere about the world of competitive rabbit showing. :)

Why does this entry not include a photo of you in the Santa Cat sweater? I mean, I know the entire internet would be able to see you in it (which would be pretty embarrassing), but you can't just SAY you have a Santa Cat sweater and not show it. Pretty please?

PS I won one of your books from Handbag Heaven! I'm mega-excited to read it!

Oh, come ON! Santa Cat picture, immediately! Please.

And remember: there's a little Santa Cat inside all of us.

Oh, hipsters think they invented everything. I threw an ugly holiday sweater party in 1998 and it was fab. Also, since it was after work, everyone had to wear their sweaters to work. It was part of the deal. I'm nice like that.
