Top 5 Reasons You Should Buy This Calendar (or at least enter to get one for free!)

My love affair with fellow blogger Sarah Von Bargen is well documented. I adore her witty, inspirational blog, Yes and Yes, and I feel such a strong connection to her personally that I'm pretty sure we were blogger friends in a past life (most likely in ancient Rome, where we wrote budget travel tips and snide fashion observations on pieces of parchment paper and distributed them for free to the masses).

As many of you may have heard, Sarah and her talented BFF recently created a calendar, called "A Year in Yes," and it's amazing. I received my copy yesterday, and when I opened it up I ran my hand over the glossy pages and literally gasped "It's beautiful!" out loud, to myself, alone in my kitchen. That's how amazing it is. It will make you act like a melodramatic after-school special.

Here are a few other reasons I strongly encourage you to pick up a copy:

Top 5 Reasons You Absolutely Need to Buy the "A Year in Yes" Calendar

1. Beautiful photography/design.

Love the photographs. Love the layout. Love the colors. Love the handwriting. This calendar might renew your faith in love.

2. Quotes that don't make you want to vomit. Plus other goodies and surprises.

When Sarah first told me about this project, she described it as follows: "It'll be called 'A Year in Yes' and feature cool photos with inspirational (but not puke-inducing) quotes, plus funny ideas and ridiculous holidays in the date bit of the calendar. And there are going to be lists! Like February? 'People that I've kissed'!!"

This thing is so packed full of hidden gems and funny tidbits that you can make yourself a cup of tea, sit down and read it like a book. And then when someone walks in and asks why you are reading a calendar, you can be like, "This ain't no ordinary calendar!" And yes, I've had this exact scenario play out in my real life.

3. Purchasing this calendar supports a couple of creative ladies doing the thing they love.

Sure, you could buy your 2010 calendar from a big calendar factory that spews smog and chops down FernGully to make their paper and employs fat cat businessmen who smoke cigars and crush dreams for fun, or you could show some love to some badass, independent, recycled paper-loving female entrepreneurs from Minnesota. Save the fairies. Go with option two.

4. Have you looked at other inspirational calendars?

Seriously, they look like they were hastily cobbled together from a few moldy motivational posters torn out of my 9th grade health teacher's classroom. My 9th grade health teacher had an unironic Burt Reynolds mustache and tried to convert my entire class to Christianity. Don't support that. Buy Sarah's calendar instead.

5. Buy one for everybody on your holiday shopping list. Bam, you're done.

I can't think of a more perfect gift for everyone on your list, from your sister to your yoga instructor to your parole officer. And as an added bonus, if you buy a calendar, Sarah will ship it to you, anywhere in the world, for FREE. Canada, Malaysia, Australia, a raft floating in international waters, you name it. Free.

Now for the really fun part: I've got a "Year in Yes" calendar to give away! For a chance to win, please leave a comment telling me your favorite month of the year and why. Or if you're feeling mega lazy, just tell me your name and email address. Or your favorite zoo animal. I'll choose a winner at random next Tuesday!

But promise me if you don't win--you'll buy yourself a copy? And one for your barista, too?

Oh goodie! I really think these calendars are fabulous! I'd have to say my favorite month is July, because it's the month of my BFF's birthday, and it's delightfully warm and means lazing around, beach adventures, water balloon fights, going out for mid-night strolls without freezing to death, fancy cool drinks... aah. yum. <3

Holy crap, that looks sweet. I like June because it's the month I first started terrorizing the planet. The only drawback is that it encourages armpit stains.

April, for sure. When that first sunny springlike day hits, look around you: EVERYONE has a smile on their face. It's amazing how beautiful it is to see peoples' reactions to the first day of nice weather- my god, it just makes you want to run around kissing people and skipping and laughing.

September :D Happy place between summer and fall, the two seasons that war for my affections.

And since you asked and I enjoy covering all my bases, Bongos.

Um, I totally bought one today, but I think I need 2! Why, because I have three fucking offices and need all the inspiration in whipping my theater & dance team in to line!

Also, after this past year, I'm pretty sure October may be my favorite month.

I like September because everyone over the age of five knows that's the real beginning of the year. I also like lemurs at the zoo. I have no idea if the lemur population is partial to September.

I have my own, but would love to share one with my sister! My favorite month is September because it is the culmination of summer, school starts usually around this time (which means shopping) and it's my birthday month!!!
I'd love to win this, so that I could use the last few dollars in my bank account to by your book. Which is on my x-mas wishlist anyway, but really the best gifts you have to buy yourself!

My favorite zoo animal is Elephants--especially at the Portland Zoo because of the Salvador Dali art in the Elephant viewing building. Elephants on stilts are so enchanting.

And please choose me, the calendar is adorable, lovable and super coolerific!

I love the March/April time of year (well, at least in Australia!) when it's starting to get cooler and I can happily wear cardis and I am no longer d-y-i-n-g of heat exhaustion like in summer.

This calendar looks fantastic!
I think my favorite month is May -- school year wrapping up, lovely weather, the possibilities of summer right ahead of me. But not yet hot. It's a good month.

And penguins are my favorite zoo animal.

I love October! We get a wicked indian summer here in the Bay Area & yet the leaves are starting to turn & it starts to look like fall. SO PRETTY!

Ah! I know the perfect person to give this to.

I kind of like October. It is still sunny and beautiful (if you catch it on a proper year) but the leaves are all lovely red and you can start wearing sweaters again.

Hm, I've never been able to decide on a favorite month. I can tell you that I absolutely hate February and March, haha. They're both cold and depressing, and I hate spelling the former. Anywayyy, it's kellydoer@msn.com, and gosh I hope I win; I love calendars AND yes & yes--and lists!

my name is tarryn. i love december because its full of giving and receiving and holidays and free time and hammocks and beaches(because i live in south africa and we have summer christmas-swimming on christmas day! win!)If they have to be cooped up then game reserves are better. and my favourite would have to be a warthog. awumbawa-awumbawa. because they are tough and super cute. and awesome.

I'm a May baby. More specifically a 16th of May baby, which is very important to me as most of my family was born on the 16th, including some friends and adoptive grandparents. Everything about that month screams happy memories at the top of its lungs. The best part was when I was younger, running through the yard super fast and sniffing the air like a warthog so I could get that fresh grass smell.

I'm sure the neighbors had a grand time watching me do that. :/ But not as much as when I would pretend I was a Pokemon.

January is by far my favorite month of the year. I love the freshness, the optimism, the excitement of starting a new year with a clean slate. The "This is going to be your year" gave me the shivers-- 2010 will most definitely be my year!!

August, fo sho. First off, it's my birthday month. Secondly, for the past few years the end of August has meant the beginning of the semester, and dear god do I miss my college friends when we're all apart during the summers.

I was going to say July because it is fireworks and my birthday (7/5) and BBQs and beaches and camping and stargazing. But really, I think it is September. As a lifelong student (currently in year 6 of a PhD program--at least it feels like I've been in school forever), I love the promise that a new school year holds. Fresh notebooks, a new flock of students, yellow school buses. Ahh. Yup. September.

Ms Constantine said...

I waaant one! But I've been debating whether to get one cause it'll arrive when I'm on holiday etc. Maybe I should quit being whiny and just buy one (on tuesday after I don't win).

My favourite month is December! The weather is generally getting better, days are longer, and everyone is in party mode.
There's ample food and drink, and time with family and friends. And then on the 25th you get presents. What is not to love?!

And, for good measure, my favorite zoo animal is the kangaroo.

I adore Yes and Yes. The calendar is on my Christmas to-get list for sure, but having two can't hurt, yes? Double the gift-giving fun.

Ooo, this calendar looks so awesome.

My favorite month is probably....October. It's an insanely busy month with several birthdays back-to-back, lots of school/Fall events going on, etc. The month flies by and always seems so rushed, but at the same time, it's a month filled with memories being created, so I love it.

Christy said...

ooohhh....October is my favorite month here in the NW because it is a. usually good weather, b. the leaves are all bright and falling, and c. hello! good weather!

November is the best month of all. It's the month of my birthday, which means my requests for sour cherry pie are met with minimal eye-rolling. Also, I like romping around in crunchy leaves. And scarves and jackets are the best. Yep, November is the best.

I am madly in love with this calendar, enough to make my calendar-hating boyfriend (he has other good qualities, I promise) insanely jealous. Just the thought of waking up to it every morning makes 2010 seem pretty promising.

Without a doubt, my favorite month is September. It encompasses the best of any world you could ever want. The first few days are the last really good beach days of the summer. Then I get to pack to go back to school (and boy do I love anything that involves organizing/packing/listmaking), and for the whole month everyone is still enthusiastic about waking up for their 8am Monday morning classes- which personally I refuse to register for. The new notebook smell associated with September is another plus. Then, just as the month is winding down and you think people are getting tired of eating only Ramen and wearing the same university T's for days on end, the weather starts to change and crisp fall days pop up. Those are the best part of the month- except for that lovely new notebook smell.

I'd take a day in September over any supercute day in April or May- unless you start talking about wedding season.

Beth said...

I love August... even though I hate hot weather.

August is the only month with no official US holidays, but it does have my (& many of my friends') birthday, which means CAKE.

August is the month of back-to-school shopping & obsessively organizing my calendar & post-it-note collection for next semester.

August is also the time when work at my job slows down, so we take days off to spend almost literally 12 hours at the beach- popcorn in the car, SANDwiches (see what I did there?), in & out of the water all day, & a bbq at night.

My favorite month is October. It's my birthday month and Halloween! So there are many reasons to celebrate. In the words of my third grade teacher:

O-C-T-O-B-E-R
Halloween brings a candy bar,
Christopher Columbus has his holiday,
fall is here and winter's on it's way. Brrrrrrrr!

This still gets stuck in my head sometimes. She created chants for every month...October is the only one I remember.

So hard to choose!
My favourite zoo animal have to be all the little blue disabled penguins at Christchurch Antarctic Centre!

Well, Winona, my favorite month is September because I get to throw myself a big birthdonk party and stuff my friends full of snooty appies. Plus, despite being a robust 33 years old I still love buying school supplies. My favorite zoo animal is any that manages to break free and torment its captors.

And I don't need to win because I just ordered my very own copy, but wanted you to know that because of your lovely, lovely blog a hall wall in Victoria, BC will have a little Yes in it.

October is CLEARLY the best month. Please play close attention to the following reasons as to why:

1. In Spanish, it is Octubre, and and it's really fun to say.
2. It easily transitions into ROCKtober, MOCKtober, FROCKtober, etc.
3. Oktoberfest!
4. I live in Arizona, and October is when the weather begins to be bearable.
5. I have a fall wreath that I made that hangs on my door.
6. Dressing up is awesome. This year I was Amelia Earhart, and next year I'm going to be Nancy Drew!
7. In election years, its when stuff starts to get really exciting, and I can pretend to be CJ Cregg from the West Wing
8. Corn mazes!
9. Haunted houses!
10. Pumpkin carving, and then roasted pumpkin seeds.

There are clearly a million MORE reasons why October is clearly the best month, but I should really be doing my work.

Favorite month-January
Reason-It's got everything December has (cold red noses, scarves, cuddling by the fire, ice-skating, pretty lights, tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, peppermint hot chocolate) minus finals and having to go to the mall to get last minute Hanukkah presents. Speaking of presents, this calendar would make a great one!

Favorite month- September. it's still warm enough to be summery but by the end of it it's ever-so-slightly crispy and fallish which is lovely. Plus September is the only month that I truly don't mind school.

omg. it's so pretty. my last calendar was a shoe calendar, but this one seems perfect for a girl going to university next year (:

anyways, my favourite month would have to be december, because hello? christmas! i get to spend time with my whole family, and there's truly nothing better than that.

Tooootally cute :]

I stopped buying calendars because they were so cheesy and lame, but these look fabuloso.

My favorite month would have to be December. Even though I'm freezing my nips off and have to wear leggings, legwarmers, sweatpants, 2 tee-shirts, a sweatshirt and a carhart jacket it is all worth while when Christmas comes around.

Not because of the gifts or the materialistic stuffs (okay, maybe a little ^^) but because every year at my house we always get about 3-4 feet of snow, and my boyfriend has to drive his truck out to come and pick me up just so I can get stuck there over-night snugglin up by the fire with his fam playing Parcheesi by a lantern because his power went out 3 days before.

I love the holidays :]

My favorite month of the year is May. I live in Wisconsin, which is cold and miserable pretty much all of the time. We battle through the snow, the cold, the wind from November through April. That is pretty much half of the year. Then May happens. And suddenly everything is green. And there are birds singing. And the sun is shining. And road construction hasn't started! And then June happens and it is just too hot, and everyone else misses winter, but not me. I miss May.

It's the best month ever. (For the record, I was born in January. I just really like the spring.)

My favorite month is December because I can take days off work to sit around wearing sweat pants, eating macaroni and cheese and making lists of what I want for Christmas.
And at the zoo I really like the penguins. Of course.

reason #10054 in my list of why i love Winona - she references Ferngully in her posts. Best animated movie ever!

I like March, because it's the first month of autumn here, my birthday is in the middle of it and I think it's the nicest name for a month.

And my name is shannon and my email address is writing_backwards@hotmail.com and my favourite zoo animal is the red panda :)

Initially I was just going to inform you that I like elephants the best, but...

My favorite month is March. Mostly because that was the month that the world was blessed with me in (aren't you lucky? you're lucky).

i love october for lots of reasons - it's the beginning of fall but it's still warm, its etymology is a direct harkening back to english's latin roots (to say nothing of the absurd drama of roman imperial history - i read 'i, claudius' at an impressionable age), oktoberfest, the genuinely scary origins of all hallow's eve and toussaint versus the kind of wonderfully tawdry and/or juvenilized way we deal w/ halloween in the states, etc. etc. my email is juliaingabon (at) yahoo dot fr - thank you!

This truly is a wonderful calendar. I'm keeping my fingers crossed...September is my favorite month of the year. For me, it's the official beginning of fall, my favorite season. The weather begins to get perceptively cooler, the leaves start thinking about changing, and it reminds me of back-to-school and buying school supplies, which I loved to do. A great month.

July - I live in the midwest and hate winter. No chance of snow in July and fireworks are an added bonus.

This is amazing. I want one. I am very poor so maybe I'll beg my mum to buy me one and support the lovely ladies!
Oh, and October- for the leaves, the layers, the pumpkins seeds, and my birthday.

so cool! I love calendars! I love October. Crunchy leaves, cinnamon, pumpkin, fall colors, the beginning of the most fun times of the year - Love it!

My favorite zoo animal is the naked mole rat. They have the worst thermoregulation of any mammal and can chew through cement!

I like October best, one because I love halloween and fall related activities, and two because it's usually around the time that I break out my tights, cardigans, and boots.

My favorite month is October. For me, October represents freedom and restoration, it reminds me of breaking away from an abusive situation and relearning who I was, in the midst of a world that is beautiful and colorful and full of scarves.

February - my birthday month - really is the best! At home in Australia it is lovely and hot and beachy but here in London it snows! Best of both worlds. Also, it means I get more gifts just when the fabulousness of Christmas is starting to fade...
