Tuesday Top 5: Hot Hosiery For Chilly Mornings

My boyfriend Nick is awesome in many ways. He loves to cuddle and he makes chocolate molten lava cakes for my friends when they're sad and he kind of looks like Mark Ruffalo and he says funny things like this. But when the weather turns cold, Nick transforms from a cuddly adorable funny pastry chef into a curmudgeonly middle-class father of six whose one goal in life is to make sure I don't turn the heater on.

Chilly fall and winter mornings consistently find me shuffling toward the thermostat, my extremities in the early stages of frostbite, and as I reach my shaky blue hand toward the dial, Nick pleads from the other room, "Can't you just put on a sweater?"

Nick and I had our first heater-related argument yesterday, which means autumn has officially begun. But you know what else that means? It's tights weather! And nothing warms my cold toes and heart faster than some fabulous hosiery.

I've actually never worn thigh-high stockings before, mostly because I'm worried they would give my thighs the appearance of a half-popped can of Pillsbury crescent rolls, but my friend Sara swears they're really flattering and wow do I love those bows.

These have been much hyped on the blogosphere in recent months, but here's the thing: they are teal and have a peacock feather on them. WORTH THE HYPE.

Super Basics Cotton Socks, $10
A liiiiiiitle boring, yes, but I'd layer these babies over some pink tights and tuck 'em into a pair of beat-up brown boots. Perfect. (And so cozy!)

I love that these tights could either be a subtle addition to a great outfit or the focal point, depending on how you style them. Just gorgeous.

Hehe great minds think alike re. hosiery and legwear. I just published a review of Ozone Socks on my blog.

Love your idea for the grey socks with bright tights. It's a pity we're just coming into summer down here. All the blogs I read lately are promoting scarfs and hot chocolate and I'm looking for sandals.

I've been wanting to get the peacock tights in teal too. I adore tights and have been wearing mine already. I think wearing tights is part of why I moved to NC from FL.

You've GOT to try thigh-highs, lady. They are fabulous for days when you don't want your tights waistband to turn you into a segmented worm.

And I'm in love with those giant socks!

oo! i so love tights. just bought those exact same grey cotton socks - fyi they are organic cotton and super scratchy, but cute/versatile nonetheless.

ah that kind of makes me grateful I live in FL and we havent even turned our heater on yet. but, i can't WAIT to throw on my fall tights!

aww i just remembered my own pair of floral tights from h&m that look like someone watercolored some flowers on my legs. they just sit around my closet since i never know how to wear them without drawing an embarrassing amount of attention to my 'stems,' as christian from clueless would call 'em.

thus i demand a follow up! what about us readers who adore jazzy hosiery minus the raised eyebrows? a sober knee/thigh-high? ok, nevermind, i just answered my own question.

Owww i wish it was still knee-socks weather here. They look so good with everything! We've moved past that and I'm now on to 2 pairs of tights. I refuse to wear jeans damnit!

I feel your pain!

I really want to try thigh highs, since it is the crotch region that always disintegrates.

I wear tights occasionally, like them on other people, but really I'd do bare legs all year round if I could. Well, I'm pretty close to doing that, but I make a few exceptions.

Oh, no. Now I feel so bad. I'm the middle-aged thermostat hater in our household. It gives me an excuse to experiment with layering (wink) and I can totally see the potential in those socks :)

I am a Huge Fan. I love tights and leggings and thigh highs w/ garter belts. I love the pink striped ones. I refuse to rock the stretch pants/long sweater look but tights are a whole different story. love love love it. :) Try a garter belt while your out one night- u will feel like a sex kitten- foreplay for your self - since those boys always try to skimp on that. ;)

As someone with large leg muscles...and some fat on my thighs...I've found that making sure the thigh highs go up fairly high prevents the muffin thigh look.

I need to find some interesting hosiery to wear with my dress for my cousin's wedding. It's cold and rainy out so it may just be black tights if I can't find something cool.

You ought to be able to ply old Nick with those thigh-highs in the first photo.

I have those last tights too, they are the BEST!
Nick sounds like my neurotic, cheap Jewish father and Norwegian, used-to-negative-15-degree-weather mother, only funnier and a better cook.

Woah those feather ones are too crazy for me haha. I like the basics and floral ones the best, so sexy!

Really cute tights, especially the peacock ones!
The only time I wear tights is when I'm going to school. The thing is, my jeans cover them up completely. The other option would be to wear a dress/skirt, but that just doesn't sound comfortable or warm enough to me.

It's so funny, I have pretty much the exact opposite taste as you. I can almost guarantee that if something bores you, it'll thrill me. If you're drooling over it, I'll usually say "pass." (But of course I still love this blog. Because you're hilarious.)

My point being: I *WANT* those basic cotton socks. ^_^

I NEED knee-high socks this winter... seriously, I need them like I need oxygen... or at least that's what I told my husband after I bought the 5th pair. :)

PS: My subscription widget recently crashed, and I lost all of my subscribers. Every last one. If you were subscribed, could you please subscribe again? Pretty please? I miss my friends. :(

Further proof you and the BF should move here to San Francisco. It rarely gets very cold or too hot. Plus, and this is big, we are HUGE supporters of cute tights and socks in this city. It's July and you feel like wearing tights and boots? Not a problem! just wait until the sun goes down and it gets nippy and go for it!
And tell BF if you move into my building, the heat is free! Comes with your rent in the form of cute little radiators which sort of softly whistle to themselves, so no muttering about how much it costs to heat this place, or how we are heating the neighborhood, as my curmudgeonly Dad always said to me. :)
