The term "voracious reader" gets thrown around a lot, but I honestly believe the phrase was invented to describe my mom.
That woman reads a book a night--her bed is often strewn with literary flings from previous evenings--and on long family car trips she was somehow able to sit up front and read contently, warding off motion sickness and tuning out my brothers' and my hilarious, 150-decibel song parodies (we thought "I got chicken, babe," a take on Sonny & Cher, was particularly clever, and I have no idea why).
So a huge part of my childhood--approximately 90% of it, in fact--was spent trying to get my mom to hurry the hell up in our visits to the library in our small rural town. Sure, I loved going to the library and picking out a fresh stack of books for myself, but there were times, as my mom stood at the front counter discussing the details of a new mystery with the librarian, that I crumpled dramatically behind the romance shelf and moaned, "I'm actually going to die here!"
Looking back, my mom's library trips probably took no more than 30 minutes, and as I got older, I started spending more time there myself, completely voluntarily. That library became one of my favorite places in the world.
Today, the librarians there are huge fans of Daddy Likey, and have done so much to support me and my writing (including ordering two copies of my upcoming book!), so I wanted to give them a shout out and a recommendation for an adorable (and affordable) librarian-appropriate necklace.
Also, an adorable (and unaffordable) librarian-appropriate necklace:

cutest...post...ever. :)
aw those necklaces are so cute!
my mom always had those trips to the library, too! she would literally sit on the ground with a stack of books ten books high beside her and still be picking out books
Oh my, this is a great post. That necklace at the end is wild! Looks like the floor around my bed.
Both necklaces look adorable.
Oooh ooh gloat time gloat time
I own that necklace pictured! She usually only sells the single serving book necklaces but she had a bunch of them draped on one mannequin for one of her listings and I got all obsessy and weird about it and finally emailed her to ask if she would make me one that looked like that. She did and it is glorious! I took some additional pictures and talked about it a little here: http://theoutlawjosie.blogspot.com/2009/09/makeup-is-easy-makeup-of-biblical.html
You guys seriously should ALL buy a superhot little book necklace from her. Not only will you love dealing with her and be amazed by the quality of her stuff, but it's a great conversation starter.
I'm really tempted to buy one of these.
Both necklaces are AWESOME! I really want the second but a) I can't afford it and b) it might seem pretentious, but if I could afford it I'd buy it and wear it, just as a statement against what is considered pretentious. I mean, if making a statement that says "I love to read" is pretentious, well, it's most definitely should not be. It should be something to be happy about, not ashamed of!
So fabulous, really lovely!
Banks Public Library thanks you! :)
my mom works there, soo..
anyway, I think I might need the top necklace! the bottom one reminds me too much of my bedroom and how badly it needs cleaning...
Haha, my poor daughter. I'm one of those moms ;) We spend hours a week at the library, and while I don't have the time to read a book a night any longer (:() I do try to get in a few a week. I want this for myself
p.s. I'm also in love with just about everything ELSE in the shop!
I love that second necklace!! Too bad it costs just about as much as my rent. Oh well.
PS: Yay for libraries and librarians! :) S.
PPS: That's awesome about your book! Congratulations! I can't wait to get my hands on a copy!

Wow. I LOVE it! Can you believe that price?! What a gem!
so cute! when i was little I was literally non-stop reading all the time! my gramma used to take me to the library multiple times a week and i'd spend hours in there... can't wait for your boook winona!
wow i love these both! my boyfriend is a librarian and i am going to use that fact to somehow make it okay for me to order one of these even though i told myself NO MORE SHOPPING. the 1st one reminds me of a book necklace i had as a kid, which opened up with space for 5 photos. i used to put my best friends' photos in there and then remove and replace them when we got into fights. haha. ~joelle
