Five Men's Fashion First Impressions

Yes, it's time again for a feature that proved quite popular in its recent debut. In case you're just tuning in, FMFFI is when I ask my five men (father, boyfriend, brothers) for their (always) honest opinion of a controversial fashion item, and confusion and hilarity ensues.

Today, the gender representatives were shown a picture of this Alexander McQueen ostrich feather hem dress, currently selling on Net-A-Porter for a cool $10,730:

And now, the men:

The boyfriend: Ooooorrggghhhhh (painful little moaning sound)....That's horrible! It looks like an ostrich! Oh, it is an ostrich. Why??

The father: (Recoils in disgust) Aw, jesus christ. (Points to the ostrich egg that is for some reason sitting on a shelf behind our computer, yes, seriously) You should say that you can lay one of those with this dress.

Brother, age 11: Ugly. What's the price?
Me: Ten thousand dollars.
Brother, age 11: Oh my god.

Brother, age 17: The skirt looks like that one giant muppet's head*.

Brother, age 19: (Curiously calm and withdrawn, shaking his head) It doesn't speak to me. It doesn't speak to me.

*Upon further prodding and google image searching, we realized the muppet in question was indeed "Sweetums," star of The Muppet Movie and shown here in a screenshot with costar Milton Berle:

Alexander McQueen can shave/slaughter as many ostriches as needed for his fashions, but for the love of god, spare Sweetums.

That is hilarious! I think I'm the only person who actually likes this dress. Although on reflection it does look a lot like a muppet. I was never comfortable with having my hand stuck up the ass of the Kermit puppet I had as a kid (it just seemed WRONG) so I suspect I might not be comfortable wearing Sweetums, or a relative of his. Oh well, what to do with that 10k I've got lying around...

Oh my gosh, that muppet is dead-on. And the ostrich egg just has to be explained. Is your dad some kind of naturalist?

QM said...

Isn't a naturalist someone who doesn't wear clothes? Then yes, that egg DEFINITALY has to be explained...

No, you're thinking of a naturist.

QM said...

Oh right. I was worried for second about where that egg came from.

OMG!!! I posted this same dress on my site yesterday! It reminds me alot of Oscar the Grouch! If Net-a-porter ever set up a message board, I have a feeling we run into each other, ALOT!! LOL!

Oh my gosh Samida! I just read your post and I have to go check if my brother secretly reads Stained Couture and stole your muppet hair comparison, or if that dress just looks so damn much like a muppet that it's a universal reaction.

samida said...

I'm going with Universal Reaction! LOL!

Wow your brother was spot on with the muppet. Who would wear such a thing, I mean dress?

I love the dress, but I've also loved the muppets from childhood.. maybe it's a Freudian fashion reaction! "It doesn't speak to me" Hilarious!

I know this is an old post but Sweetums is my all time favorite Muppet! I think it's the giant orange nose and ridiculous shag that does it for me.
